Laura DeVeau Smith's Profile

About

I create clothing that I want to wear. I'm adventurous but not overly sensitive to trends. I like things that fit and flatter and have something interesting, something that makes people on the street feel compelled to stop you and say - I LOVE your outfit.

I used to do quite a bit of screen-printing but at times I felt limited. I'd print a bunch of the same design with the same ink colors. With Spirit Zebra I've taken many of the techniques and tips I've learned from the screen printing process and now use them to look at each piece and say "What am I inspired to do here, with this one garment?" Its very freeing. I certainly end up with some duds, like the time I spent two hours adding a geometric pattern to a pair of leggings and ended up making them look like a pair of clown pants.

But there are also some major successes, like my cherry blossoms and neon henna designs. Always a hit.

I am inspired by the surge of funky, neon tribal designs coming out of Brooklyn and by the comfort and ease of the beachwear I grew up with in coastal Massachusetts. I now live in the super groovy town of Burlington, VT - where bicycles rule, art and live music are king and one can get away with any sort of fashion. Its the perfect stomping grounds for any artist looking for something new and adventurous.

I am grateful for whatever series of events lead you to Spirit Zebra and I hope you find something that speaks to your Spirit.

I also own a shop called Within Organics where I focus on sustainable fabrics and inspiring, positive statements on my clothing. Check it out! http://www.etsy.com/shop/withinorganics
