Stephanie Metz's Profile
Although I work in several different media, it seems I am becoming known as ‘That Felt Sculptor’ for my work in solid felted wool sculpture of humans and other strange creatures.
To create my felt sculpture I use a felting needle—a tool designed for industrial production of sheets of felt, but applicable to hand working techniques. I enjoy exploring the possibilities introduced by using a soft material to represent subjects that are traditionally condemned to hard, cold, solid manifestations. I also like the idea of transforming traditionally ‘low’ materials into fine art.
Whatever the medium, my work tends to focus on animals, their physical forms, and their relationships to each other (don’t forget humans are animals too) in an off-kilter sort of way.
You can see examples of my work at my website…
