The story behind Storyteller Jewelry

EVERY FATHER’S FEAR:
Despite my father’s anxiety that art college was preparing me for a career in waiting tables, I’ve been a full time working artist for over 20 years.

A HEAVENLY JOB:
My first job out of college was a gift from the angels. I’d never made a piece of jewelry in my life, but I got hired by a talented and openhearted jewelry designer. She taught me everything about jewelry construction, and let me use her studio after hours to work on my own designs.

JEWELRY WITH NOTHING TO SAY:
Soon I was designing my own jewelry. But something was always missing. My designs looked perfectly lovely, but felt completely empty. Hey, they never covered this problem in art college!

A CHOCOLATE-INDUCED VISION:
Then one day I ate an entire Toblerone bar and fell to the floor. I could feel myself floating up out of my body. But instead of going into the light I went into a vision. I saw myself becoming a storyteller. What? Impossible! Sure, my head was brimming with stories. But I could never work up my nerve tell them in public.

THE NICEST BOSS IN THE WORLD:
There was a storytelling class being taught at a nearby school but I was too shy to go by myself. So the jewelry designer I was working for took the class with me. Has there ever been a boss as nice as that?

FEAR IS EXHILARATION WITH TRAINING WHEELS :
Well, now I’d done it. I’d signed up to tell a story at a coffeehouse open mic. I was so scared, when they called me on stage I could barely hold the microphone. Then I started telling, and the audience started listening. What a rush! I was a storyteller.

IT’S FUN BEING A STORYTELLER...UNTIL THE RENT IS DUE:
Soon I was hanging out with poets and folk musicians, and performing my stories in coffeehouses across New England. I called my act “True stories that haven’t quite happened yet.” It was a life filled with many riches. Just not the kind you could pay the rent with. Then my boyfriend at the time came up with a brilliant idea.

BOYFRIENDS HAVE THEIR MOMENTS
“What a dumb idea,” I told my boyfriend. He wanted me to make miniature books with my stories folded inside them to sell at my gigs. I didn’t think anyone would buy them. But then I reconsidered. What if I made the little books into pins so that people could wear them after they’d read them. My boyfriend was a genius!

JEWELRY WITH A LOT TO SAY
I made 7 miniature books and put my best story inside them and brought them to my next gig. They sold out! I couldn’t wait to make more. But this time I really thought about their cover designs. It suddenly came to me that making jewelry is a lot storytelling. When you look at well-designed jewelry, it feels like a story that's being told with color and shapes and energy. Finally my jewelry had something to say, inside and out.

WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE?
It’s 20 years later and I’m still making those book pins. But they were just the beginning. When you’re an artist, one idea always leads to another, and then another. So please explore my Etsy site where you will find many lines of book-inspired jewelry and ornaments. Some have stories. Some have the word ‘peace’ in many languages. And some have blank paper inside, just waiting for you to write something beautiful, meaningful, spiritual, magical....
