Gwen Kaufman's Profile

About

My name is Gwen Kaufman and I have been designing and making teddy bears for over 15 years. I hold a B.F.A. in Graphic design and was a graphic designer for over 15 years.

From the time I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to do something creative. I came from a family of creative people. My grandmother taught me to crochet, my grandfather, who was no stranger to paint and paper, encouraged me to draw, my aunt taught me to knit and my mother showed me how to craft. There was always some project going on in our house.

I have made fun jewelry, photo albums, Christmas decorations and soft sculpture dolls. I still do, on occasion and from time to time may list them in my shop. I have also worked as a photojournalist and have had my poetry published.

I got into teddy bear making in the early 1990's when a woman I worked with had a baby and I needed a gift. I wanted to make something I had not made before, so I found a pattern for a teddy bear in a magazine and decided to try it. I discovered I had a flair, but didn't at all like the pattern. So I made my own, refining it until I had a look I liked. Needless to say, I fell in love with teddy bears and making them.

I exhibited my bears for many years and, up until now, the only way to get one of my bears was at a teddy bear show or a charity auction.

Today I call myself "The Bear Behind" in honor of my grandfather, who encouraged my creativity. He was creative himself, having made up the verse from which I took my name:

A girl and a boy went out to play
When a big, brown bear came along their way.
The boy climbed up the nearest tree he could find,
But the girl ran on with "The Bear Behind".
