I love sewing. I sew a lot. I mostly enjoy sewing historical/fantasy costumes, but I will occasionally branch out into other areas. Mom taught me to sew when I was very young, on her 1970's era Viking. In third grade, my teacher asked the class if anyone's mom could sew some hand puppets together for the school craft fair. Since my mom knew how to sew, I volunteered her. So, I brought the puppets home and told her I had said she would sew them. Her response was simply "Why don't you do it?" So I did.
I was not the coolest-dressed kid in Middle school and I knew it. Often I would simply wear white t-shirts and black jeans, trying to attract as little attention as possible.
At some point in High School, my paper route money ran out, and my favorite pair of jeans started developing holes in it. I tried stitching them up invisibly and darning the holes at first, but they kept getting bigger. Finally, I got fed up with having holes in my knees and on my butt, so I gave up trying to fit in and sewed bright, colorful patches to my jeans. To my surprise, the response was generally positive.
I started sewing for myself after going to a Ren Faire and deciding I liked the costumes. It was somewhat frustrating to finally find a style I liked but that was not generally available. So began a love of things vintage, antique, period or unique. The harder the puzzle the more I enjoy making it.
