About

Welcome to TheForgivingTree! My name is Matthew and this is my popsicle stand. With some help from my wife, Alyssa, I run this ETSY site, screen print and hand-draw all of the designs.

To start things out, I never planned on being an artist or an artisan of any kind. I loved to draw during classes and picked up the pen only once in a while when outside of school. I always saw art as a dead end road; the kind that left families hungry. For me, it has been all about long term security; teaching high school biology and raising a family on a humble yet steady income with excellent benefits. I have been pushing all my life for some sort of security for my future family. To say that art was on the back-burner is an understatement.

It all started during my last semester as a dual Adolescent Education and Biology major. One day, while I was at class, my wife decided to go through all of my used notebooks and take pictures of the sketches found scattered throughout. She then uploaded them to a photo album on Facebook. By the time I got home there had been a flurry of comments and likes on the sketches. Alyssa started telling me that day that I should be putting my work on clothes.

After graduation, the hiring season came and went - and needless to say, the market for new teachers in New York State is in really rough condition. And so here I am... I spend as much time as possible substitute teaching any and every subject and class I can get ahold of. In the meantime, I bought my first hobby press and started printing on up-cycled and recycled clothing. What you see here is a work in progress; one that is closer and closer to my heart every day.

As an end note:
TheForgivingTreeClothingCompany works hard to promote environmental consciousness. I use only eco-friendly water-based inks.
