About

"THE GLAMOURIST BRINGS TIMELESS GLAMOUR INTO YOUR EVERYDAY, transforming the mundane into the beautiful with the alchemy of his talents... 30 years' professional experience as a specialist Art Deco artist-designer, active in many areas of art and design and the heritage industry give him and his work a rare level of expertise and authenticity".

AS BOTH A DESIGNER AND SELLER ON ETSY, I take my work very seriously: I apply the same principle to both my work and the goods I sell - the job of a Designer is to practise the art of beautifying everyday life while making it work. There is no reason why beauty and function cannot go hand in hand - one without the other does not constitute good design - that is the job of a Designer, and that is my job, on here, for you. This principle has stood the test of time - which is why we cherish the beautiful objects from the past so much - and has already been…

This principle has stood the test of time - which is why we cherish the beautiful objects from the past so much - and has already been undermined by our digital mentality, and why it is crucial that we keep the tried and tested methods alive before they disappear altogether.

I PRIDE MYSELF ON the comprehensive range of art and design expertise I offer: I describe myself as an all-round Artist-Designer/Maker - in the old-fashioned sense of the word – as were the designers we admire such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh or William Morris. It used to be said that a good designer can design anything - and my creative instincts and interests have always led me sideways into other areas with ease: if I am interested in something, I want to try it, and I have found that most of my skills are transferable; and where they are not, I am always keen to learn those I need. Wherever I can, I study primary sources and use the same techniques and materials the original artists/designers/makers would have used. This is vital to the authenticity of a piece of work.

I AM NOT JUST OLD-FASHIONED in terms of my personal style and tastes: as well as endeavouring to authentically recreate the style of the Art Deco period, it is equally my aim to deliver old-fashioned service, courtesy and quality, without marketing gimmicks or hype. Digital technology for instance, is an amazing and exciting thing – it enables me to have a website and to be here on Etsy – but I use it to enhance and support, not replace, my manual skills.

MY WORK is always carefully researched and is characterized by accurate period detail throughout, which is something you can be confident about when buying from me, whether it is my own work or vintage goods. Combining sound historical knowledge and meticulous attention to detail with my theatrical experience, I endeavour to recapture the best of the past, to take us beyond the stress and frantic pace of modern existence back to the gentler, slower life we all yearn for: when good taste and good manners were the watchwords, when pleasures were simple, when sentimentality, gentility, niceness, and prettiness were valued and not cynically derided, and when 'Glamour' and 'Elegance' really meant something!

MY WORK is not superficially just about decoration, pastiche, or objects and pictures in isolation: I study my sources in their social context, and thereby understand and, I hope, capture, the spirit of the age I set out to depict, whilst also giving it relevance to the modern world. I therefore have an academic, almost anthropological approach to my art, as I always see it in connection to people and am fascinated by the social history.

WE ARE CUSTODIANS OF THE PAST, and whether that means preserving and conserving - and appreciating - objects that have survived, or not allowing modern technology to wipe out the carefully-honed manual skills of centuries, we owe it to our ancestors - personal or collective - to treat their legacy to us with respect - for we would not be who and where we are today, nor have the beautiful things they have left which we enjoy, were it not for them.

I BELIEVE that we should learn from the past and MUST keep alive traditional, tried and tested skills, techniques, values and standards, and thus preserve the best of the past to enjoy in the present and the future. I hope I achieve this with my work, which expresses the romance and nostalgia I feel so deeply in my spirit, creating the images and objects that are close to my heart.

This is my Ethic.
