gypsy's thimble (thimbal) n. Middle English. 1 A very small cup-like object made of bone or ivory, almost impossible to find in this age. Not to be confused with the more common sewing thimble. The gypsy's thimble is believed to be imbued with magical abilities (compare with Mary Poppins' carpetbag.) Hundreds and thousands of glorious and amazing treasures could be brought forth, if one knew the charm; usually a verse or nonsensical phrase. 2. I spent many many years living on the very edge of the world...on a promontory behind a lighthouse on Oregon's amazing coast raising my daughter, and many dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and at least one ghost. Our tiny, tiny red house had originally been built as a "weekender", meaning it was barely 400 square feet in size, thus, "no bigger than a thimble." And that is where making jewelry and art for a living became a reality for me. The constant roaring of the ocean, the sea lions barking at night, the buoys moaning.... I desperately miss those sounds. I have recently moved to back to the Midwest for family reasons. But the trains whistle at night here, and I once again get to experience snow and see cardinals. I have been an artist, mixed media, jewelry and quilts for many years and I was blessed to have my work in galleries around the country. Now I have settled into Etsy. I hope you find something in my shop that speaks to you.
