I come from a family of women in the Appalachian Mountains who loved to fabricate with needle and thread, sometimes by machine, sometimes by hand. My grandmother was a devoted quilter and as a child, I played beneath her quilting frame when she worked. She sewed the large pieces with her treadle machine and fine top-stitching was all done by hand.
My aunt was passionate about knitting and crocheting. Her throws, blankets, and shawls were in great demand, especially her special baby blankets made with the softest yarn you could ever imagine!
My mother designed and sewed nearly all of my clothes when I was a little girl. The best thing is that she always made a tiny matching dress for my doll! She even made a formal evening dress for me when I was 5 years old so that I could be a princess in the first grade Harvest Festival…
