Doug Royer's Profile

About

My name is Doug Royer and I'm an artisan living in Overland Park Kansas. I've enjoyed various forms of woodworking over the years, and it wasn't until 2000 that I discovered turned vessels inlaid with gemstones, while honeymooning in Taos, NM. I was fascinated with the exquisite workmanship the artists displayed.

After the honeymoon, I set out to learn and practice as much as I could and eventually found a little niche I could call my own. Having developed a unique shape for my bottle stoppers, which is the foundation for my hair stick designs, I have perfected a finishing technique which produces a smooth glass-like finish.

In 2006, my wife Erin, was working as a manager at a local Mercedes Benz dealership. Being the proud spouse that she is, she would routinely do the show-and-tell thing with my stoppers at work. Not long after, she was approached by her General…

My name is Doug Royer and I'm an artisan living in Overland Park Kansas. I've enjoyed various forms of woodworking over the years, and it wasn't until 2000 that I discovered turned vessels inlaid with gemstones, while honeymooning in Taos, NM.

Not long after, she was approached by her General Manager who asked if I could inlay the dealership name and Mercedes logo, and if so, they would in turn give them away as customer appreciation gifts. Well, after quite a bit of trial and error, I figured it out and the dealership in turn was ordering between 50-75 per month, thus, the birth of Timberstone Turnings.

In July 2007, the Kansas City Star ran a brief article on the stoppers, and my market continued to grow. In addition to numerous individual orders, I was contacted by a large talent agency who represents a number of NFL players as well as actors, and I was commissioned to create a customized stopper for Ladainian Tomlinson, the NFL's 2006 MVP.

In 2009 I began focusing primarily on gemstone inlaid wooden hairsticks, and this is where I find myself today. With my wife and best friend Erin at my side, along with Ivy, our shop and Harley dog, and Reggie the cat.
