Richard Bischoff's Profile

About

I am Dick Bischoff, a retired academic living in University City, MO (suburb of St. Louis).
I've been working with wood since I broke into my father's tool chest while he was away fighting WW2 (he didn't mind). A few years later on the school playground I discovered tops.

The top is one of the oldest toys in human history; first described in Egypt around 2000 BCE. Of the many types of tops, the supported top is the easiest to spin and requires only the pull of a string to set in motion.

The support, or handle, keeps the top in a vertical position while the string is pulled, then the support is lifted up and the top is on its own. When I retired several years ago, I decided to try my hand at making tops and have been addicted to turning and spinning ever since.
