I inherited my love of stones from my mother, a self-designated rock hound, and like her, have found myself collecting field specimens both large and small throughout my life. As far back as I can remember, rocks have decorated my rooms. As a child in south-central Texas, I also routinely played with chameleons and caught honeybees and fireflies.
A summer spent with my family in Panama led to an ongoing fascination with nature and the diversity of life. A year as a Peace Corps teacher in the tropical country of Belize took me through the jungles of Guatemala and the coral reefs of the Carribbean and eventually led to a career teaching high-school biology, chemistry, and physics.
