Vanessa Story's Profile

About

Here I am, a hardworking, stay at home mom trying to make it as an artisan/crafter. Years of working in social services and in corporate cubicles, and I find myself coming full circle. For my family, art is in our blood. As a child, I worked as an assistant silversmith to my mom, traveling Midwest art fairs with the beautiful handcrafted work I helped make. In college, I worked as a colorist for my mom's children's illustrations to earn money for school.

I eventually had to find my own way. After choosing the field of psychology and working years as a crisis counselor, mental health tech, and helping people with disabilities develop their own art, I was drawn back into the field.

I went back to school to earn a minor in art with a focus on painting. I had been painting for years as therapy but I also needed to develop my own style.

Which brings us to one of my other true loves: Nature and the natural form. Most of my work takes on a flowing line. Most of my jewelry has a natural feel to it. My painting is somewhat photo realistic with a painterly line. I strive to find a way to share the beauty of nature without losing its sense of movement and timelessness.

In order to create some of the pieces, I needed something that would capture the changes of the seasons in the leaves my son handed me, the shells we collected on the beach, or that moment when you catch an eagle in flight.

I stumbled onto a terracotta clay and developed a method of capturing that movement. Sometimes I use the items in my pieces or I make an impression of it. Each piece is unique, made with love, and holds a little bit of nature within. This clay and my art tries to bring this to you in person.

Other mediums that interest me are decoupage and assemblage. Makes sense as you will notice I frequently refer to collecting items such as rocks and sea glass, this extends to paper and printed material as well as plastic animals, bits of metal, and memorabilia. I use these items on my jewelry boxes and cards.
