Wendy Burton's Profile

About

I started sewing in high school. One of my first professional jobs was working at the Cleveland Play House in the wardrobe department making costumes. I then moved to doing makeup and hair for theatre, films and television. I’ve lived in Cleveland, Ohio, Orlando, Florida, Los Angeles, California and now in Toronto, Ontario.
When my daughter was born I decided to become a homemaker. For those of you that are “stay at home” you have probably at some point needed to do something for yourself either for sanity sake or to help out with bills. I have also been through that and because we seem to move about every 10 years or so it needed to be something I could do in any location we happen to end up at. Etsy was my solution.
Ever since my daughter was born I have always loved to make things for her and her dolls. I, like most people, would go to the fabric store and buy a cute pattern get it home and…

I, like most people, would go to the fabric store and buy a cute pattern get it home and not really understand what the directions where trying to convey. I was so happy when I found Youtube because I could listen and see someone actually demonstrate what I was having trouble with. I thought that would be a great way to write a pattern people could really understand.
In 2009 I opened my first Etsy shop Sparklypoodle. I made and sold doll bedding and mattresses. I was surprised at how well I was doing. In 2010 I decided to open another Etsy shop FattyB. FattyB is a pet bed shop where I can let my imagination go a little wild.
I decided to start writing patterns because my friends and family frequently asked me to explain the instructions from traditional patterns you buy at the store. They all said the same thing “there is not enough written explanations to the steps and the pictures don’t really help”.
The first pattern I wrote was for the doll bedding I was making and selling. That did so well I decided to do a mattress pattern and again it sold very well. The feedback I was getting made me think that pattern writing could be my next shop so I opened WendySaySew in 2011 and I could not be happier with the response from my customers.
I really love being able to help my customers find the joy and fun in making something they otherwise might not try because they find traditional instruction to be confusing and or frustrating. I appreciate every feedback comment, positive and negative. Both make me want to get back to my sewing room and continue to create and improve myself with every new pattern or project I create.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me better.
I hope you enjoy my shop.

Have A Happy Day
