Often admiring and envying the work of artists, I dabbled by struggling with drawing, pottery, guitar, blacksmithing, and photography. Often favoring function over form, I fabricated items that I needed for motorcycle and car restoration (or "life support") and expressed some talent in the ability to combine existing materials in new ways. However, I never really felt that I was making something from absolutely nothing---that is, creating.
Then I discovered glass. I could combine the manual skills I learned with the knowledge I used in my day job as a physics teacher. This helped me understand the behavior of the glass, anticipating what would happen and when.
