About

Hello! thanks for dropping by. I'm a (happily) retired belly dancer that is now happily making costumes for other belly dancers. I've spent many years in the stage lights and now my big satisfaction comes from seeing other dancers looking (and feeling!) glamorous in one of my costume creations. I really feel that the experience of having been a dancer has helped me design and make costumes that fit well, move beautifully, and stay on.

I've been to Turkey a number of times to study the art and culture and I really love it there. A lot (nearly all) of my paillettes and sequins are purchased there. As a result, I am able to make very unique costumes with unusual colors. Sometimes I just sit in my sewing area with piles of bags of beads and sequins and put them together in various combinations to see which ones will subtly compliment each other, and which ones are really going to "pop" under lights…

I absolutely LOVE working with rich, luxurious fabrics. I like to take an ancient design, harem pants for example, and sort of redo it using crushed velvet, burnout velvet or some other scrumptious fabric. And, I suppose I may as well admit it, lace makes my heart sing.

Some of the big influences on my designs are the experiences I've had in Turkey and of course the style and glamour of the Turkish belly dancers themselves. My roots are in the traditional beaded cabaret costumes. I had made my own for many years and have had many dancers commission costumes from me as well. I also love the styles and fashions of the West from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

As I make each costume, I imagine how it will look in motion. It is a tremendous amount of fun for me to make them. I hope it is just as much fun for you to wear them.

Here's a link to my "policies" page. You can look them over to answer any questions you may have about shipping and business stuff. https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/ZambakDesigns/policies

Some other things I do...sit in my favorite chair and drink excellent coffee, read Middle East history books, walk down by the river, and watch old (1920s thru 1960s) movies.
