Amy Cools' Profile

About

I was born and raised in California, and have been sewing nearly as long as I can remember. With one home ec class at age 14 as my only formal training, my interest in designing and constructing pieces that fit well, look well, and are perfectly comfortable on all types of human forms led me to teach myself all aspects of design, pattern drafting, sizing, and construction of garments, and at age 19, to offer for sale my first line of reconstructed vintage designs, and about a year later, my first line of all-original designs.

My style is most directly informed by my fascination with the human form, and my years of fine arts study and practice mostly focused on figure drawing and painting.

With this training, I grew to have an instinct for designs that fit and flatter almost any type of figure. My love of color and whimsy grew out of my own love of art, of vintage and unusual clothing and fabrics, of the bright, sunny, and bold distinctive 1980's and 1990's California style I grew up observing, and of my own sense of fun, adventure, and humor.

My design sense led me to begin collecting and wearing vintage clothing early on, and I have been a buyer, seller, and collector of vintage clothing, fabric, trims, accessories, and home decor for over 20 years.
