Agnes and Amy is named for the “partnership” between my grandmother, Agnes, and myself. By partnership, I mean the love that goes beyond death, because fifteen years ago we lost her very suddenly and the family continues to grieve. We also would have celebrated her birthday the very month we lost her, which coincides with the month of Mother’s Day, a day on which we all would have honored the matriarch of our family, the glue that held us together, and the rock that helped us all stand tall—just by being…

Agnes and Amy is named for the “partnership” between my grandmother, Agnes, and myself. By partnership, I mean the love that goes beyond death, because fifteen years ago we lost her very suddenly and the family continues to grieve. We also would have celebrated her birthday the very month we lost her, which coincides with the month of Mother’s Day, a day on which we all would have honored the matriarch of our family, the glue that held us together, and the rock that helped us all stand tall—just by being herself.

When I first thought of naming my business after her, I had second thoughts because the idea of a daily reminder was just too much. I miss her, and I know those around me do, too. I toyed with other names and concepts but “Agnes and Amy” was the only one I felt "right" about, so I set my own feelings aside, trusted God, and went with it. Grief is an interesting thing and honoring her in my business has become part of the process. It’s like it has become a way to reconnect with someone I’ve had more time without than with. Agnes and Amy Crafts has brought healing to my heart in ways I never expected. I never expected to feel so close to her again; I never expected to feel like I'm doing something she would be proud of. I never expected to feel just a tiny bit of what it must have been like to be her, having so much impact on so many. She touched so many lives, and by reaching just a few, I get a small taste of her life. Among her many hobbies, she loved all things handmade and enjoyed sewing, so I feel connected to her in this way.

I also never expected to feel like through Agnes and Amy Crafts, the dreaded month of May has been reclaimed. Agnes and Amy Crafts was officially "born" May 13th, 2011, with the approval of my first business license and registration with the state of Washington, USA. May has, over the last couple years of operating Agnes and Amy Crafts, become a time of celebration and remembrance rather than a somber time of mourning. At first I didn't understand why God wouldn't let me get away from naming my business after her; I was scared of the pain of facing her absence every day. But now I understand. He has taken the ashes and turned them into something beautiful. My heart still hurts, but she's with me every day. Thank you for allowing me to honor my wonderful grandmother and reconnect with her by bringing handmade crafts and vintage crafting materials to the world.
