I was just six when I learned to knit late one Saturday morning. My mother left me in the care of the head saleswoman of the yarn department of our town's only department store for free lessons and while I struggled with the basic knit stitch, she happily knitted and purled an afghan. I still have those size 10 white bakelite needles! The following year I joined the local 4-H group dedicated to knitting and chronicled our attempts to master the higher skills for the town's newspaper. It seems like ages ago, now.
A few years later, I learned clothing construction when our neighbor, who worked as the in-house seamstress at the exclusive women's clothing store, gave me two grocery bags of fabric scraps. My Barbie acquired most of her wardrobe out of that precious stash!
