April Melchior's Profile

About

Hello! I'm April, the owner of Urban Works Textiles. I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, moving to Philadelphia in 2008 to attend the University of the Arts. I earned a bachelor's degree in Illustration in 2012. I have always been interested in architecture and urban life, so illustrating urban landscapes and patterns came naturally to me. I taught myself to sew in 2010 and 3 years later I merged my love of urban landscape drawing with my sewing skills. Urban Works Textiles was born in June 2013 with a focus on throw pillows, but I now have a full line of home decor and women's accessories.

In January 2015, I was awarded the #GIRLBOSS Foundation Grant to help me with my growing textile line. About

I used the funding towards an important piece of machinery - Urban Works Textiles now digitally prints all fabric in house with our large format printer, specifically configured to print on fabric! This helped me reduce my lead times from 6+ weeks to barely nothing, most retail orders now ship out within 3 days.

The future of Urban Works Textiles includes a major and exciting shift away from unethically imported goods. Our products will soon be created with materials that are Made in USA, produced under Fair Trade standards, or by using recycled vintage materials. My goal is to eliminate the use of unfair working conditions, and to drastically reduce our carbon footprint, reusing and recycling when we can to keep fabric waste from ending up in landfills. I aim to complete the transition by the end of Fall, 2015. Stay Tuned!

Oh, and stop by my shop and have a look will you? Thanks :)

xoxo,
April
