Hello and welcome to artifacts!

I live in the Finger Lakes region of central New York, where gorges and waterfalls create beauty beyond compare. My workbench in my studio faces a hand-painted rainforest mural that I never get tired of looking at. Nature inspires me, as does modern art, ancient artifacts, geology, and geometry.

I don’t know whether it’s because I am self-taught or in spite of it, but I strive to create a collection that is strong on design and individuality. I’ve studied art and art history on my own, not in any organized curriculum. And I've always loved jewelry, admiring both innovative and traditionally ethnic approaches to it.

For a long time, I'd buy or find interesting pieces at garage sales or secondhand stores and modify them. Then a friend asked me to repair a necklace, and that launched me into making my own pieces and the neverending exploration of new ideas and techniques.

Because I hand make almost all components of my jewelry, each of my pieces is unique due to happy surprises that occur in the metalsmithing, etching, patination, and other processes I use. While much of my jewelry is somewhat larger than more traditional lines, I am really focused on wearability. I often use a lighter gauge metal, or etch away some of the heavier metal, and work-harden it so that it feels solid but light on the ear and neck. I personally like to forget what I’m wearing rather than be reminded by weight or another discomfort--until someone compliments me, that is!

My hopes as an artisan are to resonate with the inimitable in you and offer you a way to express your distinctive self physically and imaginatively through jewelry.

So, have fun looking around! And please feel free to contact me with questions, comments, or custom orders -- either through an Etsy convo or by emailing me at artifactsjewelry [!at] gmail.com.
