Michael Kranz's Profile

About

I'm Michael Kranz. I operate Artios, Inc. out of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Artios is a Greek word that means, "perfect, perfectly fitted or fully equipped". Any of these definitions apply to pieces bearing the Artios name. This comes from a demand for fine craftsmanship and years of experience. It is my belief that craftsmanship, sound design and the use of the finest materials available are a must in order to achieve perfection.

I was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts in Art/Studio with an emphasis in sculpture. After graduation I studied as an apprentice in furniture design and woodworking at Kirby Studios in Bennington, Vermont. Upon relocating to Greensboro, I worked 5 years for Marshall/James, Inc., a small high end furniture company. In the fall…

In the fall of 1989 I launched ARTIOS, Inc.

While what you see here are my jewelry boxes the principle focus of the company is custom woodworking. That is my bread and butter. There are numerous projects that I am very proud of. The following link to my Facebook page shows several projects and work in progress.

I enjoy the large projects I have done. But, for me my jewelry boxes are therapeutic. It is a chance for me to do everything as I want. It is my chance to be expressive.
As you can see I am not outlandish with my designs. They are boxes and I am not trying to "reinvent the wheel" as they say. I prefer to play with subtle surface details. Not everything I do makes it to the showroom. There are a few that have made great firewood. I allow only the finest veneers and have a high standard of exact precision.

My jewelry boxes are NOT made of solid hardwoods. Although the core is solid mahogany they are faced with a rich selection of exotic hardwood veneer. Unfortunately, veneering has gotten a poor reputation for cheap or substandard workmanship. Although in some cases this may be true, the perfection demanded at Artios mandates the use of veneer. First, the design and graphic possibilities become endless with the use of veneer. Another strong case for veneer is that attempting to make these jewelry boxes in solid wood is inviting disaster. Because wood expands and contracts the joints would crack and the wood split. Last, many of the wood species used are becoming scarce. It is only good stewardship using veneer.

Each jewelry box is given a Greek name in keeping with my company name. Names are chosen that reflect the "personality" of each design.

Custom projects are always welcome.

My goal is that you appreciate your investment and the care of the design and craftsmanship even more in ten years than you do at the time of purchase. That is the mark of perfection.
