hello, my name is david galchutt and i've been making art for as long as i can remember....well, actually i can pinpoint the moment to a day in kindergarten, when i decided to become an artist. the teacher instructed us to draw trees. everyone's trees looked like brown and green q-tips....and i was indignant, because trees had branches and leaves and bird's nests....so that's how i drew mine.

i come from a family of artists. my father and mother met at chouinard art institute as students back in the 50's. my father worked as a graphic designer and my mother studied costume design. i can feel their influence in my own work.

i graduated from art center college of design in the 80's. my commercial art career has been primarily in three areas. i worked for a number of years freelancing in the toy industry (barbie helped pay my bills for many years!). i currently work as a designer/illustrator in the giftware industry. my biggest artistic passion, however, has been working in children's publishing. i wrote and illustrated a picture book for simon and schuster (there was magic inside), several years ago. currently i freelance for children's magazines. i am a frequent contributor to highlights for children magazine. it is so gratifying to work for a magazine that i read as a child. they are a wonderful client.

my style has evolved over the years, though i've always loved including a lot of detail (i love the old flemish masters). historic characters in extravagant costumes are also a favorite subject of mine as well as anything slightly quirky or whimsical.

in 2014 i moved from southern california to the beautiful southern oregon coast.
