Paula Arwen Owen's Profile

About

Everything here is designed and created by me, Paula Arwen Owen. I am a native of Brooklyn, NY, now living upstate. My unique illustration style is created with hand cut paper silhouettes, collage, ink, and digital art. Silhouette art has a long history in many cultures. From silhouette portraits popular in the 1700’s to traditional cut paper art in China and Poland, it is a beautiful art form using the contrast of dark and light, shadows and illumination.
I love the simple beauty of silhouettes, and also the contrast of rich color and texture that I add to my color pieces. I am fascinated with the opposition of darkness and light, and inspired by my surroundings, from the urban world to the natural beauty of the countryside. The subjects of my work range from serene fantasy and nature to dark gothic themes, often inspired by stories, dreams, and myths and legends…

I am fascinated with the opposition of darkness and light, and inspired by my surroundings, from the urban world to the natural beauty of the countryside. The subjects of my work range from serene fantasy and nature to dark gothic themes, often inspired by stories, dreams, and myths and legends.

My cut paper art is all created by hand, usually it starts with a drawing, which is then cut out of paper by hand, and often scanned into the computer to add color and textures. My greeting cards all start out as hand cut images, which are then scanned in and cut out digitally (saves my hand from carpal tunnel trying to cut all that cardstock!). The different papers and embellishments are all assembled by hand. Larger, detailed artwork is usually cut by hand.

When I'm not drawing or cutting paper, I like to read and write stories, watch good horror movies, go hiking, and spend time with my family and pets.
