Ayu Tomikawa's Profile
I was born and raised in Japan. As a child, I loved reading folklore and drawing pictures. When I was six years old, a classmate introduced me to manga (comic books), and I have been hooked ever since. I was also fond of watching sci-fi animation, and all of these influence what I make today.
I always liked the look of woodblock prints, but I never adapted it as my form of expression until my mid twenties, after I moved to the United States. I think being a Japanese in a foreign country attracted me to the art of woodblock printmaking. Maybe I felt like I can connect with my roots by practicing a traditional Japanese art. Perhaps it was a way for me to search for my identity. However, shortly after, it was much simpler. I discovered the pure joy of printmaking.
Recently, my inspiration comes from music, nature, and of course everyday life. I live and work in El Cerrito Bay…
