about 5 years ago i discovered the world of antique, vintage matchbooks in the town of Alameda,California where a huge antiques market is held once a month, every month of the year. A vendor out there had this big box containing hundreds of ancient matchbooks from the 1920's & 1930's.
i'd never seen anything like them.
i'd seen matchbooks before but none that were so old and from the art-deco era and was in awe over the visually stimulating graphic designs that decorated each matchbook.
i was offered the entire box for 20 dollars.
unfortunately just about every matchbook in the box had been damaged by water, were slightly damp and smelling of mold.

unfortunately just about every matchbook in the box had been damaged by water, were slightly damp and smelling of mold.
what in the world could i ever do with all of them anyway, i thought? and declined the offer.

Over the following months i noticed other boxes and jars of old matchbooks at this samre outdoor antiques market and began collecting them.

One day, a few years later, while in an inspired mode and creating collage art i realized the matchbooks were the same size as a bunch of magnets i'd been keeping in my desk and began applying color xerox copies of matchbook covers to the magnets. at that moment i had finally found a creative use for the old matchbooks -
Matchbook-Magnets!
making them has been a hobby ever since.
