about 5 years ago i discovered the world of antique, vintage matchbooks in the town of Alameda,California where a huge antiques market is held once a month, every month of the year. A vendor out there had this big box containing hundreds of ancient matchbooks from the 1920's & 1930's.
i'd never seen anything like them.
i'd seen matchbooks before but none that were so old and from the art-deco era and was in awe over the visually stimulating graphic designs that decorated each matchbook.
i was offered the entire box for 20 dollars.
unfortunately just about every matchbook in the box had been damaged by water, were slightly damp and smelling of mold.
what in the world could i ever do with all of them anyway, i thought? and declined the offer.
