About

THE POTTER:
I'm Randy Doughty. I began making pots in the mid 90's at Penn State University. After college I began working at a local art center called The Creative Oasis. At The Oasis I worked on refining my pots, and teaching others to throw their own. Sadly, The Oasis closed last year. I'm now throwing in my own studio, and doing all my firing at the Potters' Guild In Lemont, PA.

THE POTS:
Most of my work is functional porcelain for the kitchen and home. I try to throw forms that are graceful and have a presence of their own. I keep glazing simple. I want the subtle variations in the glaze, and the fire within the kiln to provide the excitement on the surface.

Recently, I've been excited by the art of bonsai, and began producing some pots for my trees. At first it was hard to put aside my beloved porcelain, and turn to darker, grittier clays (oh the horror). But it has opened up ways of working I would not have tried otherwise. Such as, oval pots instead of round, and using local clay slips instead of glaze. I'm enjoying the pots and excited to see what will come.
