Jen Johnson's Profile

About

Hi! My name is Jen, and I've made beaded jewelry for almost two decades. I am now selling on Etsy exclusively at my other shop: Mama's Magic Studio. http://mamasmagicstudio.etsy.com

When my 9 month old son began to pinch me while breastfeeding, a nursing necklace was clearly needed, so I decided to make my own. BFBeads ~ Baby Friendly Beads were the result.

Baby Friendly Beads are the original, adjustable-length, one-piece design for nursing necklaces. Because there is only one, continuous piece of cord used in my necklaces, there is no risk of the pendant breaking off and scattering beads everywhere.

I created my innovative, adjustable-length design so that it does not require a clasp, because the clasp is often the weakest part of a necklace. All of my necklaces and bracelets are one of a kind -- while you…

All of my necklaces and bracelets are one of a kind -- while you may find attempts to imitate my necklaces, no other breastfeeding jewelry is quite like Baby Friendly Beads!

Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing, but it can be challenging, particularly with older babies. I'm happy to make something that can help other mothers with their nursing experiences.

All of my necklaces and bracelets are one of a kind and handmade by me with a mother's love and my innovative Baby Friendly designs. No other breastfeeding jewelry is quite like Baby Friendly Beads!

***The Story Behind Baby Friendly Beads***

As I thought about what might help distract my son from pinching my skin and pulling my hair, I envisioned something that he could hold as well as play with. I wanted it to be adjustable in length and sturdy enough not to break as he tugged on it. After a few attempts, I came up with a design that I believe to be unlike any other nursing necklaces.

Attractive enough to wear every day, the necklaces also effectively occupy a baby at the breast. The beads slide easily on the cord, delighting a baby's curious eyes, and the pendant is the perfect size for little hands to grasp. Some of my necklaces include jingle bells to add to the fun!

My son (and later, my daughter) helped me to fully babyproof my basic designs both for durability and for interest. While this design is the template for every necklace I make, each is one of a kind. My customers tell me their babies really like to play with the beads. Whenever I wear my necklaces around babies, their interest is immediately attracted to this nifty thing around my neck.

I decided to make reminder bracelets as well when I discovered that using them was MUCH easier than keeping a nursing log. And more discreet than massaging one's breasts to see which one is more full ;-)

***Shop Policies***

Shipping:

I ship Priority Mail with delivery confirmation, and I combine shipping if you are ordering multiple items. If desired, I can include insurance -- please convo me to set that up or include a note to seller upon checkout. If you are interested in first class shipping rates, we might be able to work something out -- please convo me.

Please note that since all my work is one of a kind, I cannot be responsible for replacing items lost or damaged in the mail.

Quality Guarantee:

I am so confident in the strength and design of my necklaces that if they break during the first year of use I will repair them for free. (Buyer pays for shipping.) Because of the personal nature of jewelry, I do not accept returns. Please contact me at bfbeads [!at] gmail.com in the unlikely event that your necklace needs to be repaired.

Common Sense Caution:

Nursing necklaces and bracelets should never, ever be used as teethers or toys. (Even for babies without teeth!) Though all my jewelry is designed with a baby's safety in mind, cords and wires are a strangulation hazard and beads are a choking risk. Some of my necklaces include jingle bells, which have small parts that could be a choking hazard.

Baby Friendly Beads are made to be strong, but they are not indestructible. Remember this is jewelry, not a toy. By purchasing Baby Friendly Beads, you agree that I am NOT responsible for any accidents or injuries that may occur while using and wearing the jewelry. Always use under adult supervision, and please use common sense when wearing and using the jewelry.

Studio Details:

All of my jewelry is made by me in a smoke-free (but cat friendly) home.

If you are in the San Jose area and would like to see my jewelry in person, please email me at bfbeads [!at] gmail.com. I often have additional items that I've not yet had a chance to list on the website.

***Use and Care of Baby Friendly Beads***

Nursing Necklaces: Each Baby Friendly Beads nursing necklace is carefully designed and created to help entertain and occupy babies, particularly while nursing. This is especially helpful with older babies who scratch or pinch or are easily distractable while breastfeeding.

The sliding silver bead by the knot on each necklace allows the length of the necklace to be adjusted without having to take it off. To put on the necklace, the silver bead with its two adjacent colored beads should be touching the knot (or at least at a point long enough to fit the cord over your head).

Wear the necklace at its full length, or shorten it by sliding the silver bead, grasping the knot or cord in one hand and one of the adjacent colored beads in the other. Use the colored bead to push the silver bead in the desired direction. Pulling or pushing directly on the silver bead may result in tangling or the bead sticking on the cord.

Be sure to check your necklace periodically for any wear or tear on the cord. If you notice fraying or wear on the cord, immediately stop using the necklace. (And contact me if your necklace is less than a year old; see quality guarantee above.) It is best not to get the cord wet. If it does get wet, let it dry fully before wearing.

Reminder Bracelets: Reminder bracelets are used to keep track of which breast was nursed on last (or which breast needs to begin the next feeding). Simply wear on the left or right wrist and switch as needed!
