Junk mail. I started making sculpture out of paper because of my steady supply of junk mail. I had taken one paper-making class in college and knew paper pulp could harden into any shape, so I started playing. I wanted to make interesting holiday cards for my family and friends. Like gifts I could mail. The first piece I made was a large star, about 5 inches across. I tore up my junk mail and soaked it for a few days, and mushed it up further with an old kitchen mixer. I made the mold out of plaster. Using a sponge to soak up extra water, I pressed the soggy oatmeal like pulp into the mold. It dried on my windowsill after a few days.

Some of my family members still have those stars, on mantles, on the wall. My brother actually puts his at the top of his Christmas tree every year.

The process has evolved, making pieces first in clay, creating a wax mold, then the final casting in recycled paper pulp. Simple, ecological, economical. By using clay, and wax I can even reuse my molding materials. I have a technique for making beautiful things from garbage.
