Blackwater Beads' Profile

About

Blackwater Beads is hand-crafted jewelry made by Nansemond Indians. The Blackwater Swamp area has been the home of our Tribe for hundreds of years.  The Blackwater River joins the Nottoway River to form the Chowan River which empties into the Albermarle Sound.  The Blackwater- Nottoway confluence makes up the Virginia-North Carolina border.

The Powhatan people, as a status symbol, wore beaded necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Their jewelry was also used for trading purposes. The most common materials used were shells, freshwater pearls, copper and animal parts, i.e. bone and teeth.

As contemporary American Indians, we do like the turquoise and silver utilized by the Southwestern Tribes. While these are not traditional, they are made by Nansemond Indians.
