About

Bonnie Ellis was born and raised in West Texas. She is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. After graduation, Bonnie Ellis has lived and worked in Los Angeles, New Mexico, and Minnesota.

My passion is to create on canvas that which exudes the beauty of the skies, nature, the horizons, without painting a completely realistic portrayal. I seek to capture what life was supposed to be…heaven on earth.

The layering of paint is apparent in my work. I use many layers to form the atmosphere.  This often results in a very misty and dreamy appearance, thus helping to create a richer and denser quality.  The light subtle tones with the intense color variations create depth and a mystical experience. I use oil for its layering properties, usually painting many pieces at a time, while waiting for them to dry.  Therefore, several other original works inspire each new piece.  The birth of one painting takes place during the creation of another.  The conceptual process happens while painting…there is no planning ahead.

Born into an artistic family, my love of art and fascination with creation gave me the inspiration for my paintings.  My Texas farming family background allowed me to see things grow and created a passion that gave me the motivation for my paintings, which include horizons, sunsets, sunrises, building dust storms, and rain clouds.
