When I was a child, there was a delightful curling vine on the side of my house that had caterpillars on it every year. They were my favorite, and I looked forward to seeing them just when the weather would turn warm. The delicate, black spikes and scrunching bodies were so much fun to watch and touch. I loved holding them in my hand. Many a caterpillar ended up in glass jars in my room, holes carefully punched into tin lids, leaves and twigs thoughtfully added to keep my "pets" happy. I would anxiously wait for each caterpillar to spin a cocoon, hang upside down on a twig, and eventually, miraculously, gloriously hatch into beautiful monarch butterflies. Delicately they would stretch their fragile wings, and I knew it would soon be time to say goodbye to my special…
