About

Bookwright - someone that makes books. Wright (name, cognome (It.)) surname of Wright family.

Marine ecologist and naturalist by profession and training. Musician and artist as a lifelong creative pursuit. I started dabbling in fiber arts (paper) and bookmaking while teaching and learning how to incorporate arts into science. Nowadays we call it STEM or STEAM (with an A for Arts) but it's all a form of observation. In my scientific work, observational studies are the foundation of knowledge and data collection in any field. Recording through visual identification and quantifying through counting whether it be in a field notebook or at a microscope in the lab, relies on our ability to identify and write. The early notebooks and sketches of scientists such as Ernst Haeckel, or naturalists such as Henry David Thoreau have proven to be more valuable to modern day scientists than we imagined. These visionaries simply recorded what they saw in a journal.

As my interest in paper and book arts grew, I also pursued research and graduate studies. My time dwindled but I still found moments to teach papermaking workshops with children and adults of all ages. I experimented with printing and binding a handmade zine for other hobbies, and took some fiber workshops in Maine. While living in Europe for several years, I had the opportunity to experience the rich tradition of hand paper and bookmaking in Italy.

The result is about 10-12 solid years of playing with books & paper as a fulfilling creative outlet of expression and a mastery of the techniques required to make and print a book from start to finish.
