About

Hi, I'm Jessica. I'm a self-taught jewelry maker and I work full time in my handcrafted jewelry business, By A Wire. My background is in environmental science (I worked 9 years as an environmental consultant), but my passion is making metal clay and chainmaille jewelry.

Working in the corporate world made me realize that it can be a challenge to find jewelry that is sufficiently elegant and functional while also expressing your unique style in a tasteful way. I have designed my jewelry with a working professional in mind. My jewelry offers beauty, functionality, and unique designs.

Having worked in a profession that is largely about customer service, high quality work, and attention to detail, I am no novice to providing these services. I understand how to communicate with my clients to make sure I meet their needs, and the high quality supplies and…

I understand how to communicate with my clients to make sure I meet their needs, and the high quality supplies and workmanship of my jewelry won't disappoint. While this all sounds great, don't forget I'm also a person, I love to talk about jewelry, creating, design, running, hiking, skiing, and my dog Leggo. Feel free to send me a convo anytime to ask questions about my jewelry or find out more about me.

If you are interested in learning more about me, here's a little bit about my life story:

Who I Am: I grew up in Tennessee playing in my dad’s woodshop and admiring the collection of fabric and color swatches in my mom’s interior design studio. My design style is a hybrid of these strong influences and is reflected in the natural elements that inspire my jewelry, my love of making things by hand, and the use of color and texture in my work. After college I headed to Alaska, where I found my career and was able to enjoy amazing scenery, abundant wildlife, and lots of firsts including seeing the northern lights up close and personal and also experiencing more snow that I ever thought possible. While I enjoyed my Alaska time, I was ready to be a little closer to family and have slightly milder winters. My other half decided to take a job in Idaho and off we went. We still can enjoy the outdoors year-round but we have warmer summers, milder winters, and we get to see spring flowers bloom before June!

Rougher Times: My mom had been valiantly fighting cancer for three years when she finally lost her battle in 1996. For years people have always wanted to tiptoe around this, but this event shaped who I would grow up to be and how I view the world more than I ever realized. Seeing that kind of illness at a young age, experiencing the loss of a loved one, and seeing the amazing outpouring of support from friends and family left a strong impression on me. While I have noticed through the years the different ways this has played into my life, the most recent influence it has had was on career choice. I decided I would rather do something that I really love doing than slogging through a career that didn’t inspire me, after all, you never know how many days you have left to really enjoy things. Making jewelry has helped me reconnect with my mom’s creative and playful spirit, something that she certainly passed on to me but got lost for a time during daily duties of earning a living. I feel the creative juices of both of my parents flowing through my veins, it's the fuel for my jewelry business. My dad has been a great mentor for me during starting my business and continues to be today. If you want to see some of both my early and current inspirations check out his shop www.rosettestoragechests.etsy.com.

By A Wire History: Although I have always been artistic and creative, I am relatively new to making jewelry for sale (mostly I created for myself, friends, and family). After I bought my first wire jewelry book I was hooked and began to see endless possibilities. The more research I did on materials and methods, the more inspired I became. I finally got the nerve to start my own business, By A Wire, in January 2012. It was a big step to leave a good paying career to follow my heart. Thanks to all the jewelers and other creators out there who are so helpful and supportive of someone green to marketing their craft and starting their own business!

Inspirations, Process, and Approach: I find I am inspired by all manners of things, textures, colors, nature, people, focals, mixing styles, and the general creativity of others. I don't have a particular style - I just see something I like and find a way to work it into a piece of my jewelry. No matter what the style or price, I take special care with each piece working until the piece meets my satisfaction. I make each piece by hand using high quality materials. Before I offer any piece for sale I wear it for a day of regular activities to make sure that it is comfortable and functional for everyday wear. If the piece passes my test, I clean it and put it up for sale, if it doesn't pass the test then I rework the problem area(s) and repeat the process until it passes my test or head back to the drawing board. I love beautiful jewelry but beauty isn't everything, if it looks great but snags, needs constant adjustment, or is uncomfortable I probably won't wear it. I want each of my pieces to be a new favorite for the person who receives it, not something that sits on a shelf. I enjoy the creative process and love each of the pieces I create. My hope is that each of my customers love the jewelry that they purchase as much as I do, and if a few of my pieces become heirlooms that can be passed down through generations you won't find me complaining ;-)

Additional Info: As my pieces are handmade, no two pieces are exactly alike. I use myself as a model in sizing my pieces and indicate the size (length) of each piece in the description. If you need the item resized just let me know. For additional details about my By A Wire shop policies please see http://www.etsy.com/shop/byawire/policy

Disclaimer: Really I am just a normal person who happens to have a creative side expressed through jewelry. Any given day you can find me in my studio working on my next project or out running, hiking, or skiing with my good buddy Leggo (my black lab mix). He has been with us for quite a few years now, and though his focus is a little different than mine (he uses my studio time as nap time), he is usually by my side through each creation. Personally I think he is most excited when I run out of ideas because I like to go for a hike through the woods behind our house to get some new inspirations. I love to talk about jewelry so if you have a question or a request for a special order convo me!
