Jim Ferland's Profile

About

My name is Jim Ferland and I am Cabochon Designz. Just me.... no big organization.... just me.

I have been an avid nature lover, camper, hiker and rock enthusiast since I was 5 years old and went camping with my Dad for the first time - in a hurricane! The lashing rain, wind and lightening was soooo cool!!

Anyway - I thought about becoming a Geologist, but didn't. I thought of becoming a lot of other things too - and didn't. But I DID become a lot of different things and have always led an interesting life pursuing a wide variety of cool stuff. I became a mold-maker, where I learned to hand diamond polish hardened steel - training that serves me well as a lapidary. I have been a manufacturing engineer and quality assurance manager, I have been a cook (saucier) for award winning chefs in high end restaurants........ and so on,,,,,,, and so on........

When I moved to Tucson, AZ in 1999 it was inevitable that I got hooked on rocks - again, what with having the world's largest gem and mineral show in my back yard every year. I am a member of the Old Pueblo Lapidary Club - a fantastic organization with great shops to learn in and great people to learn from. I have my own small lapidary shop at home and spend as much time as I can cutting and polishing cabs when not off doing any one of the million other things that interest me.
