Meredith McGriff's Profile

About

Meredith first learned to fire raku at Earlham College in 2002. Since then, she has completed a BFA in Ceramics and a BA in Japanese at Ball State University, and has travelled to Japan as an Artist in Residence at the Shigaraki Ceramics Cultural Park in 2008, where she learned about traditional raku and created her own works mingling both Japanese and American raku practices. Meredith enjoys raku firing partly because it is an integral part of the history and culture of Japan, but also because it has crossed into the Western art world, where it has slowly evolved into a new form of ceramics with an influence from both Japan and the West. She is fascinated by this ability of art to act as a conversation between cultures, and hopes to continue this tradition of cultural exchange by integrating both American and Japanese ideas into her artwork.
