Chiara’s Hand Painted...I grew up creating art and always knew I wanted to live my life as an artist. At four years old I wrote and illustrated my first and only book, ‘The Hollawen Biurd’. My small crayoned book tells the story of a little night cap wearing bird that didn’t get to go trick or treating.....hmmm. I came across it several years ago while going through “treasures” with my Mom. I just had to laugh aloud when I saw the .20 cent price tag in the upper right corner. I’m still laughing and selling!
I started painting ceramics while living in one of the grooviest-and my favorite-beach towns St. Augustine, Florida. I learned the craft while I worked at Moultrie Creek Studios for Galye Prevatt in her adorable shop right in the heart of town. My experience there inspired me to major in ceramics when I transferred to the University of South Florida and I’ve been working in this medium ever since.
I start my ceramic process with a piece of low fired bisque ware. I like a smooth surface to paint on so tiles and finished bisque make for a great ceramic canvas. I think up a design and will sometimes paint it on paper in watercolor first. Once satisfied, I draw the design on the bisque piece in pencil-which burns off in the firing. I use low fire nontoxic under glaze to paint the design on the piece, it takes between 1 to 3 coats. The under glaze must be thoroughly dry, there’s an overnight waiting period, before I apply two coats of clear low fire nontoxic glaze. Once it has dried overnight again it is fired to cone 06 (about 1800 degrees) in an electric kiln. The piece is now ready for you to enjoy! It is food safe, but not dishwasher or microwave oven safe, so please wash your new piece of functional art by hand!
Thank you for stopping in and I hope you'll come again soon!
