Hi and welcome to my Etsy Shop, Chriscustomquilts!

This is the story of how I ended up making quilts for you....

My mother was a great seamstress and taught all 4 of her daughters to sew. However, when I was younger, my sewing was limited to making clothes. As I moved into middle age and my children needed less attention on a daily basis, I felt the need to do something creative. My work was fairly stressful and I thought some creative outlet might be helpful in stress reduction.

I tried pottery - but that was definitely not my medium! Not only was I slow in developing the necessary skills, I realized I have always loved color, which at my level anyway was not a part of this craft.

Realizing that I had sewing skills, but was not interested in making clothes (high fashion is not really my style) it dawned on me that I could sew quilts - useful and potentially beautiful items that left lots of room for creativity.
Knowing nothing about quilts or quilt making, I headed for the local library where I borrowed almost the whole collection on quilts!

I read up on quilt types, quilt history and quilt patterns as well as general instructions about how quilts are made. I was off and running....This was in 1997.

My first quilt was a "strip" quilt - with solid strips alternating with patchwork strips. It turned out rather well! From there I made several quilts for my home, my parents and a couple of friends. i just kept going and soon I had way too many for family and friends so I started to sell them at craft fairs. I also added lots of new items, such as wall quilts, lap quilts, baby quilts, table runners, place mats, and lots of different quilted bags.

Check out the selection in my shop! And remember, I am happy to make custom items to meet your specifications!
