About

I am primarily a self taught artist and have always felt creative. I worked my way through college by teaching crafts at an arts and crafts store, everything from embroidery and macramé to tole painting and pottery. I now paint on a regular basis, and can't stay away from it.

Like many of you I find that painting or any art is relaxing and a large stress relief. I would like to encourage anyone to try it. That is why I had the idea to develop some exercises that anyone can try out. To start with I've come up with 3 flower images that you can color or decorate in any way you like. These are designed by me to be true paintings. Most of the coloring books I've seen are too busy.

If you've been coloring for some time and have been disappointed that the image yellows and fades. It is because of the materials. Wood pulp based paper contains acid and will yellow from the inside out. There are different grades of pencils and markers - generally the cheaper ones will fade because they are not professional quality. As all of my teachers have said "use the best quality you can afford".

My true art career started with water color painting by taking a class at a local community college. I have also taken numerous workshops from other practicing artists. Being with a group of other artists creates a synergy that inspires me. I now primarily work wtih acrylics and collage with an abstract subject. I especially love intense color, and have made a study of color composition. I enjoy experimenting with different media and techniques. There are so many new things to try!

I don’t know you said it first but: “ART is learning to see”. As a visual artist I’m inspired by things around me, I especially look for patterns: the leaves on a tree, colors in the shadows, the layers of a landscape, how the light hits an object . . . it is all around you, look closely.

For me art is also a journey not a destination. Every time I paint I feel an almost spiritual connection to the universe; it is like I’m outside myself in a different sphere or “In the zone”. I loose track of time and where I am. Fortunately for me if I go too long my dog Charlie will come nudge me back to the here and now.

As you can see by the photo, I love dogs. I recently adopted a new guy, his name is Charlie and is quite a character, we are getting to know each other.
