In 1986, I qualified from Reigate School of Art and Design, Surrey, on the Calligraphy, Heraldry and Manuscript Illumination course with Anthony and Margaret Wood and have worked for several years now as a freelance calligrapher and heraldic artist, firstly at home in Glasgow and subsequently in Edinburgh.
My course at Reigate was highly specialised but it was a very welcoming place so despite being my first time away from home, I loved being there and met some wonderful people who are some of my closest friends to this day.
After graduating, I began working as a freelance Calligrapher and Heraldic Artist and in 1989 was taken on as one of the heraldic artists in the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh where we, as a group of artists, write and paint the Letters Patents and Matriculations for Arms' documents on calfskin vellum which legally grant their bearers Armorial Bearings - or 'Coats…
