About

History has checked its fur coat. We are The Coat Check girls. We are home and fashion accessory designers in the Pacific Northwest.

We make pieces only very infrequently. Check back periodically to see if we have anything in our shop. We do not do any custom work or use customers' own coats - apologies.

Why fur? As designers who also re-work vintage textiles, we come across generations of vintage fur coats lying in mountainous piles on the rag house floor, headed for the landfill. (The rag house is where old clothes and housewares go to die.) Usually these coats have small but difficult-to-repair rips or missing buttons and thus are rejected even by the pickers who supply vintage clothing stores, despite their otherwise excellent condition.

Rather than see all these coats go to the landfill, we professionally clean them and give them a second - or third - life. Animals died for these coats, and we don't think furs should be thrown out in an act of careless disregard. Why do we like fur? For its intrinsic beauty, but also because we both saw Dr Zhivago at an impressionable age, and to Canadian girls the mountain of fur coats spoke of survival and love in cold, romantic climes.

The very first bedspreads made by humans were made of fur. We try to make our fur throws with this in mind, except that ours are beautifully finished with satin backings (made from the fur coat linings) and they smell good.

Each of our pieces is painstakingly made and ultra-reinforced with archival methods so that it may become a long-lasting heirloom.

Please ask us if you want more information about our methods or philosophy regarding fur.

We wouldn't buy new fur, but we feel vintage fur is a different matter. We don't believe that the thousands of fur coats in existence should end up in landfills - we think it's wasteful and disrespectful to the animals who died to keep generations of people warm in the harsh Canadian and Northern winters... for more about us and our materials, please see our profile.
