Debra Freeman's Profile

About

First and foremost, I'm a doll collector although the fashions are what really interest me. I was a huge Barbie fan as a child and kept my childhood collection until I rediscovered Barbie in 1991. Since then, I have accumulated a vintage doll collection including almost everything made by Mattel from 1959 to 1973. I also have a small collection of vintage Madame Alexanders, Ginny's and Betsy McCall's and have recently become interested in Barbie's precursor -a German doll called Bild Lilli.

In 2009, I attended Barbie's 50th Anniversary Convention in Washington DC and was motivated to sew some Barbie outfits for table gifts. That was the beginning of an entire new direction for me.

I create my own designs as well as reproduce rarer vintage Barbie fashions made only for the Japanese market. I have attended five national Barbie Conventions - most recently in New Orleans in July and the second Ken Convention in Milwaukee. I made The Beatles on Ed Sullivan for the Category of 1960's Televison, National or World Event for the Ft. Lauderdale Convention. This diorama won the top ribbon for The People's Choice for best diorama at Convention. Also made Rear Window for the LA Convention and it won the Chairman of the Judges ribbon as well as a first place ribbon. In New Orleans, I created a pirate ship manned by Kelly's Krewe which also won the People's Choice Award. At Kenvention this year, I was Co-Chair for Centerpieces and helped to dress the centerpiece dolls for the final Saturday night centerpiece. The captive Cowboy was my outfit.

Barbie has helped to make many doll friends for me through the years and kept me young. Who doesn't remember the excitement of a going to the toy store to get something new? I still get that thrill even after collecting for over 20 years. Hope to meet you on Etsy!
