Erica Schwartz's Profile

About

Hi! Welcome to my shop! My name is Erica, and I am a freelance product and interior designer in New York City.

I grew up in the suburbs of New York City and attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. My fascination with human behavior led me to study religion and psychology in college, and in a roundabout way led me to discover my obsession with industrial design. After graduating cum laude from college in 2001, I worked for a series of architects before returning to school at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. I received a Master of Industrial Design in 2007 for which my thesis focused on the design of sustainable products and the human relationship with food and the environment. My studies of people, thought, design, and the environment put me in a unique position to recognize the interesting relationships to be found in nature, culture, and imagination. About

My studies of people, thought, design, and the environment put me in a unique position to recognize the interesting relationships to be found in nature, culture, and imagination. I am a voracious reader of science fiction and magical realism.

Inspiration:
Most of my designs are inspired by NATURE, the ENVIRONMENT, and FOOD. I unite seemingly disparate interests in all things HIGH TECH and futuristic with heartfelt environmentalism to create objects that speak of my interest in the future of humankind. Designs are intended to be beautiful while reminding us of our tenuous place in the universe and our relationship with the rich network of life around us.

Manufacturing:
All of my products are produced using modern technologies. These technologies allow for ease of customization and will ultimately allow distributed manufacturing. They include computer aided design (CAD), computer aided routing, laser cutting, and 3-d printing (CAM).

Environment:
Materials are chosen responsibly and utilized to minimize unused material. Any waste that is produced is properly disposed via recycling, composting, or reuse. I use recycled silver when possible. Gift boxes are made from recycled paper and packaging supplies are reused when feasible. If you place an order but do not want a gift box, please let me know so we can save the paper. My home and office are part of a larger effort toward increasing the sustainability of urban living called project:REDEFINE where we keep bees and chickens, and raise vegetables.

Special thanks to Candy Mason and Sam Swade for being my jewelry models!
