Gabrielle's Profile

About

I am an artist, gardener, and beekeeper and am fascinated by the natural world; Insects and birds: bees, cicadas, moths, bats, crows — flowers of every kind. Living in Detroit I am surrounded by industry, and for years now, have watched its ruins reclaimed by nature — the collision of the natural and unnatural worlds. I love 1920s and 1930s industrial design, pre-code Hollywood, Film Noir, Islamic geometry and architecture, Japanese prints and textiles. These are the things that inspire everything that I do and make.

On a historical note: Detroit Jewel was originally the name of a stove manufactured in Detroit's heyday, by the now defunct Detroit Stove Works. I've named my store after it as an homage (although slightly strange — I know) to the place that I love.
