American Made Furniture's Profile

About

Twenty two years ago, Lloyd Walters began
selling furniture off the back of a truck at
flea markets. When he found that the
pieces he’d bought as “solid oak” were
no such thing, he decided he could do
better. So he began hand-crafting real,
solid oak dining tables in a small shop in
Binghamton, New York.
“I saw a niche for good, quality
American-made pieces,” Walters says.
From that small beginning, Domestic

no such thing, he decided he could do

“I saw a niche for good, quality
American-made pieces,” Walters says.
From that small beginning, Domestic
Home Furnishings has grown into one of
the few remaining furniture manufacturers
making all their products in the
United States. “Approximately ninetytwo
percent of American furniture companies
are now manufacturing overseas,”
Walters says. “We’re somewhat of a maverick
in the industry as we do everything
here using all American employees and
materials.”
Success with oak pieces at flea markets
in Westbury, Long Island, and New
Brunswick, New Jersey, drew Walters
back to his home state of Pennsylvania
(He’s a William Allen High School graduate),
where he sold his now expanded
line from the Montgomeryville Mart in
Montgomery County for several years.
“The manufacturing portion of the business
started with 1,200 square feet of
work space, then moved to 5,000, to
10,000 and now 30,000 as the business
expanded and our offerings grew,” he
notes. Today, Domestic Home
Furnishings hand-makes a line of about
2,000 different items in Cherry, Oak and Maple
from a facility in south Allentown.
