Jim Draper's Profile

About

Jim Draper grew up in Kosciusko, Mississippi, the geographical center of the state and midpoint between the birthplaces of Eudora Welty, William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams. He attended the University of Mississippi where he earned a BFA in 1974. He received a MFA from the University of Georgia at Athens in 1978. By use of deceptively bucolic imagery and symbolic undertone, Jim Draper's pure depiction of Florida landscapes and subsequently beautiful compositions act as a vehicle for conceptual thought and further exploration. Draper's narrative scenes of southern flora and fauna mask a deeper fascination with the history and implications of living and working in the south. By removing the figure from his paintings, Draper positions the viewer as spectator and participant in the natural world. There, the viewer finds him/herself having a conversation about their place in the larger ecological systems.

Draper maintains a studio in CoRK Arts District (Jacksonville, Florida). He is currently working on a series of paintings for his exhibition "Feast of Flowers" at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens in 2013. His work has been the subject of countless gallery exhibitions, and today his work can be found in hundreds of corporate as well as private collections.
