I was born in Canada, but immigrated to the US when I was young. Growing up my family bounced around a bit, but I am happy to say I have come to call Chicago my home for the last 7 years. This city has so much to offer in terms of culture and diversity. I quite like it here.
Since coming to Chicago I have recommitted myself to ceramics making. My wares are functional art; I have a strong background in painting and drawing, a practice which I integrate with my pottery. I love the idea that the objects I make find their way into other people routines, lives, homes and decor.
I have always been keen on nature, animals and the environment (my parents raised me on a regular diet of Ranger Rick magazines, mandatory family nature walks, and vegetarianism). I do find it somewhat ironic that my ceramics lean on inspiration from the ocean and the animals that call it home, while I myself am planted in the midwest. While this may be true, our seas and oceans are at a tipping point right now, and the effects of climate change and over fishing are risks many of us are unaware of. Our actions on the oceans affect so many sea dwelling creatures, as well as our very own food sources, climate, and global community. I believe that education about the environment is key and unlocks the humanity and sense of morality inside of each of us. With my art I aim to increase awareness of these issues.
