Fashion for Passion with a Sustainable Purpose

I like to say I was quirky before quirky was cool. I can still remember myself at 10 years old as I began my start as a budding entrepreneur. There was the kool-aid stand where I sold a delicious grape beverage for a $1. I drank a lot of kool-aid those days. My second attempt at entrepreneurial spirit began when my friend and I decided we would paint pencils and sell them outside the grocery store. The fun came from taking what we had around the house, standard #2 pencils, acrylic paint and nail polish to create something cute and with a sense of whimsy. The sense to repurpose and upcycle was with me even back then. You might say I was ahead of my time.

I loved the process of creating back then and I still do. I love turning a mistake into a great design, the joy of finding a fabulous fabric or embellishment to inform an entire collection, and the vibrancy of color to empower a mood.

Music has been a part of my life as long as I can remember and is what inspired my love for design in the first place. On a trip to San Francisco for my music publicity company, Green Light Go Publicity, I stumbled across a custom coat shop where the tailor and designer created custom coats based on the fabric of your choice. This led me to Britex where I was determined to create my own custom coat based on a beautiful rose brocade.

I then started to be inspired by the music I heard and several of the bands I represented. I would hear a lyric of a song and a design would form in my mind. Sometimes it would trigger a larger story of life as a general meaning of the song indicated. It was at this point, at 35 years of age, I knew I had found my true talent. I’m a dilettante at heart, and thus have become good at different areas of my life through interest, passion and perseverance. This was the first time I felt I had the natural talent come to me easily and my only hard work was to develop it further.

My purpose with designing has grown into something bigger, where I want to make a difference, even if it’s in a small way. I save every piece of fabric I use and find new homes within designs of beauty. What to some would be only a useless scrap of fabric, I’m able to turn into a beautiful fascinator or covered button for a fashionable coat. I take pride in the fact that I’m using the earth’s resources to the best of my availability to contribute to a sustainable environment to benefit everyone on the planet.
