Tess Harriss' Profile

About

One of my passions has always been vintage and antique fabrics and garments. I could never part with anything with embroidery or lace or a piece of fabric that was an especially fine quality or a garment of considerable age.

I started a clothing collection in 2008 by repurposing vintage garments and linens that I had inherited from Mary, a dear friend and spiritual sister who passed away at the age of 94. This lovely sister had told some of the friends in my congregation she wanted me to have all of her sewing supplies and fabrics . Imagine how excited I was to find this included a wooden crate full of very old and exquisite dresses and fabrics from as far back as the 1920s and 30s. There were dozens of fine linen table cloths and napkins with hand-embroidered motifs and wonderful pieces of vintage lace from France and Belgium. She had been a world traveler in her youth…

She had been a world traveler in her youth and was married to a successful architect who used to bring her many fine linens and dresses from his travels also. I found several partially finished sewing projects of her own which included dresses from the 1950s with crinoline underlayers and a velvet cape... It made me want to cry thinking of dear Mary working with these lovely fabrics and I could easily picture her wearing elegant clothes like this.

As a treat for some of the sisters in my congregation I put on a fashion show with the clothes I’d made from these wonderful materials. My models were younger sisters from the congregation who were very willing to showcase my creations for me. I found it impossible to find shoes to match the outfits I’d designed so I worked out how to remodel existing shoes while using materials and trims to match the outfits in the show. After the show there was much more interest in the shoes than in the clothing and the mother of one of my models said “I think you missed your calling. You should be making shoes”. It wasn’t long before I realized that I had amazing materials for making bridal shoes and accessories. I not only had the laces and trims bequeathed to me but all over the UK there were antique and vintage shops loaded with hand made lace and antique fabrics. The natural transition was to concentrate on pieces for brides.

Once I started selling on Etsy the demand for my shoes increased to the point where my husband left his job so we could work together, not only in our new business, but side by side in the volunteer work we love as well.

In 2013 we decided to relocate form the UK to the US, which is where I am from originally, and we now enjoy a wonderful life in Houston, TX and feel truly blessed to have made many new friends who have welcomed us like family .

Being raised in a family with high standards has given me the drive to make sure that everything I create is the highest quality and loveliest item I am able to produce. I always want my customers to feel that I have given more than the usual attention to detail and have gone the extra mile to provide them with something they will cherish for years to come.
