WHAT FIRST SPARKED YOUR LOVE FOR FANTASY? HOW OLD WERE YOU?
I think I've always loved fantasy--I was a real sweetpea sort of little girl, very shy and quiet always daydreaming and making up my own worlds full of creatures out of my imagination. ( Hmmmm...I don't suppose I've changed much!) I really can't remember a particular moment, I've always sort of been wrapped in dreams and magic.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE FANTASY GENRE? I do love fairytale and myth and I think the popularity and interest in fantasy as a genre helps spark interest in those things for others--it's a wonderful doorway.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FANTASY BOOK/MOVIE/SERIES? Oh, now that's a question. Right now, Neil Gaiman is my favorite--I'm crazy about 'Coraline'. But I have so many favorite movies and books! Lord of the Rings, the Narnia Series (for both of those, I love the films as well as the books.) Peter Pan. Alice in Wonderland. Robin Hood. Goblin Market, by Christina Rosetti. Phantastes by George MacDonald is a wonderful book. I love the Arthurian legends too, and the film based on them, Excalibur. Other films I love are Pans Labyrinth, Mirror Mask,City of Lost Children, Legend, Labyrinth,The Dark Crystal...

I really could go on and on, but I'll stop there :) I'm a huge fan of film, and a confirmed book-a-holic.

ARE YOU FORMALLY TRAINED OR SELF TAUGHT?
I'm entirely self taught.

ANY ARTISTS WHO INSPIRE YOU?
So many! I'm constantly seeing amazing work that lights me up. As far as well known artists, I tremendously enjoy the work of Brian and Wendy Froud, Alan Lee, Arthur Rackham, Edward Dulac, Trina Schart Hyman and Charles Vess. Stylistically I also love and am inspired by old world dolls and marionettes.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE WILL FEEL WHEN THEY SEE YOUR ART?
The most wonderful thing that I hear from people is that my faeries make them smile, that they feel happy when they look at them. That's the best compliment of all!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER FAIRY ARTISTS?
The fairy community is wonderfully creative and supportive. I would say to do well in this genre or any other, just keep creating what makes you happy, and then get out there all the time and communicate with others. Let everyone see what you do! Create, share, and promote. And no matter what, keep going and believe in your dream :)

HOW DO YOU HANDLE CRITICISM?
As regards to my art, I really try to look at criticism realistically and constructively. What can I learn from what someone is saying to me? And then you also have to remember too, art is a highly personal thing. One person may be touched deeply by what you do, and another person, not at all. I just do what makes me happy, and if I can make someone else smile, then that's the frosting on the cake.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
The love from my family--my husband and two boys-- nature, music, poetry, mythology and fairytales, seeing beautiful work by other artists. Life!

BIO
I grew up and currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I am inspired to create my Faeries and mythic creatures though my fascination with the ancient lore and legends of the Faerie People of all lands.

My artistic inspiration comes from Nature, first and foremost.

I also love and greatly respect the work of artists such as Brian and Wendy Froud, Alan Lee, Arthur Rackham,Trina Schart Hyman and Edmund Dulac.

In addition to these, my inspiration as a doll artist comes from my love of old world dolls and old fashioned marionettes. I love the quality of a doll being doll-like, and yet seeming as if it could come to life at any moment. I believe this influence shows in my work, and is a part of what makes my dolls unique.

My creations truly seem to me to form themselves--I am only the medium. They emerge from the clay, each with his or her own distinct features and personality--they are always a surprise to me!

I began FaerySpell Creations to share them with others, (and because I couldn't seem to stop making them and they had begun to take over every available shelf and nook and cranny in my house! :)

FaerySpell dolls are meant to capture the faery as archetype, and details such as horns, fur, feathers, leaves flowers and other natural elements are incorporated into them.

They are lovingly handcrafted with no molds used of any kind, (as such there are slight irregularities to each one that add to their uniqueness).

They are a work of magic, and it is my experience that each chooses their own 'home'

FaerySpell Creations is a member of Fantasy OOAK Creations, ADSG,Global Fantasy Dolls, and Elfwood.

She is also the proud winner of the May 2005 Froudian Artist Award, and Fantasy OOAK Creations Artist of the Week Spotlight, and Global Fantasy Dolls 2007 & 2008 Competition Award.
